The Landscape
Over the past several months, Shadow Intel's continuous monitoring of leak sites, forums, and Telegram channels has recorded a sustained rise in victims from the Latin American financial sector.
Compared with previous years, we see three structural shifts:
- Initial access is sold before encryption. Initial access brokers list RDP/VPN access to corporate networks on Spanish-language forums, and ransomware crews buy it to accelerate their operations.
- Double extortion is now the norm. Encryption is no longer the only lever: exfiltrating sensitive data (customer records, transactions) is the primary source of pressure.
- Localization. Ransom notes and negotiations are conducted in Spanish, by operators who understand the local regulatory landscape.
Observed Actors
Without naming specific operations in this public summary, activity is concentrated among affiliates of well-known RaaS programs, with a growing share of regional actors.
The time between an access sale and ransomware deployment has shrunk to days, not weeks.
What to Do
- Validate your backups (actual restores, not just their existence) and keep them isolated.
- Segment your network to limit the blast radius.
- Monitor access sales that mention your organization or industry.
- Rehearse your response plan with a tabletop exercise before a real incident hits.
